Towing equipment: hitch types and optimal loads

Your vehicle can transport a variety of items via a trailer if it has the proper towing equipment. The kind of vehicle being used and its towing capacity (optimal trailer load) will dictate the right size and type of hitch, ball mount and trailer ball (the connectors) for the job.

Zequip carries Draw-Tite hitches in all classes, along with front-mount and ultra frame receivers, to accommodate a range of towing requirements:

Class I:

• Includes subcompact/cars, SUVs, vans, light and heavy duty trucks
• Towing up to 2,000 lbs gross trailer weight (GTW)
• Able to tow cargo box, jet ski, motorcycle, bike rack, lawnmowers

Class II:

• Includes cars, SUVs, vans, light and heavy duty trucks
• Towing up to 3500 lbs GTW
• Also able to tow a small boat and small trailer

Class III:

• Includes SUVs, vans, light and heavy duty trucks
• Towing up to 8,000 lbs GTW
• Also able to tow a fishing boat and medium trailer

Class IV:

• Includes light and heavy duty trucks
• Towing up to 18,000 lbs GTW
• Able to tow a large RV

The wrong equipment = towing trouble

Using the wrong size or bent hitch, improper alignment and improper cleaning/maintenance of towing parts can result in issues that prevent closure and smooth driving, including:

• Inability to secure the hitch over the ball
• Inability to fit and attach the hitch to vehicle weldnuts
• Exhaust rattle
• Unresponsive steering
• Vehicle swaying

Of course, the worst kind of trouble you could get into when towing is putting yourself and other drivers at risk. An imbalanced load can cause instability and unpredictable pitching and swaying on the road. Make sure you know capacity and limits, including:

• Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR): vehicle weight limit and towing capacity
• Gross combination weight rating (GCWR): weight of vehicle and loaded trailer
• Gross axle weight rating (GAWR): axle weight limit
• Tongue weight: hitch weight capacity (typically 10 percent of the total trailer weight)
